Working principle

The measurement of dissolved oxygen is based on the well-known Clark cell principle, where the oxygen permeable membrane isolates the water sample from the electrode, so there is no need to adjust the sample.
Other reducing or oxidizing ions do not interfere as they cannot pass through the breathable membrane.
Apply a constant voltage to both electrodes to maintain a constant potential for each electrode. The gold working electrode (cathode) will reduce dissolved oxygen to hydroxide ions:
O2 + 2H2O + 4e- --> 4OH
The oxidation reaction occurs on the surface of a large silver electrode (anode):
4Ag+ + 4Br - --> 4AgBr + 4e-
The oxidation-reduction reaction generates a diffusion current, which is proportional to the concentration of dissolved oxygen.
